We’re delighted to have retired StFX Biology Professor Edwin DeMont joining us on the hike to share some of the exciting Citizen Science projects underway at Keppoch this summer.
Along the way, we’ll learn about several projects that are helping us better understand, and protect, the biodiversity of Keppoch Mountain:
BugQuest eDNA Biodiversity Survey - Keppoch is contributing to this national Citizen Science project, using environmental DNA (eDNA) to uncover some of the remarkable biodiversity around us.
Bats at White Rock Cliffs - With support from the Young Naturalists Club, a bat box has been installed near the White Rock Cliffs. Recent bioacoustic surveys at the site have already detected bats, giving us an exciting glimpse into the wildlife active after dark.
Watching for Hemlock Woolly Adelgid - We’ll also hear about Keppoch’s contribution to an early-warning monitoring program for Hemlock Woolly Adelgid, an invasive insect that poses a serious threat to Nova Scotia’s hemlock forests.
